Hickory Hill Plantation

Portraits and Pictures
John Hart Crenshaw and his wife Sina Crenshaw
Crenshaw Portrait
This painting reproduces the only known photograph of John Hart Crenshaw and his wife Francine "Sina" (Taylor) Crenshaw. Since the location of the original picture is unknown and the remaining copies are badly faded, this maybe the best remaining likeness of Crenshaw.
The former owners of the Old Slave House also have copies of photographs of some of John Hart Crenshaw's daughters and a niece who lived in the house in the 1840s. The Illinois State Historical Library possesses the original portrait of Elizabeth Hart, the mother of John Hart Crenshaw and the daughter of John Hart, long-claimed to be one who signed the Declaration of Independence. Recent research shows that not to be the case.
