ROLL Of HONOR OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS BURIED IN ILLINOIS

(SHOWN BY COUNTY OF BURIAL)

Compiled by Gale F. Red, updated:  March 9, 2004

This list is a result of long hours of searching records and writing thousands of messages to people all over Illinois. The original list of almost three hundred names came from the microfilm “ROLL OF HONOR OF BURIAL PLACES OF SOLDIERS, SAILORS, MARINES AND ARMY NURSES OF ALL WARS OF THE UNITED STATES BURIED IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS.”   Most of those records were taken from a combined reading of the 1929 two-volume book of the same name and the 1956 State archives microfilm of the same title.  It is especially curious that in the earlier work the names of Confederate veterans are almost entirely absent.  It would appear they were intentionally not included with other U.S. military veterans. In the 1929 volumes, the names of Confederates buried at the Alton Confederate Cemetery (Alton Prison), Camp Butler National Cemetery (Camp Butler Prison), Rock Island National Cemetery (Rock Island Prison), Oakwood Cemetery (Camp Douglas Prison), and the Mounds City National Cemetery are all not included.  Only a small handful of Confederates are included in the 1929 work.  In the 1956 work and in most cases, Confederates are only identified as Confederate, Rebel, or CSA.  Innumerable entries in the book and on the microfilm show no allegiance, any unit, or any other information, so it is impossible to determine from that record if the men were Confederate or not.  The listing of names for the five cemeteries named above will be available on separate rosters.  This listing reflects contributions from many people and sources, and is an on-going project.  If you know of any other Confederate Veteran graves located anywhere in Illinois or can make corrections or add any information on the men already on this list, please contact Gale F. Red, 5 Hunters Pointe Court, O’Fallon, IL 62269-3133, telephone 618-622-8949, email: galered@yahoo.com or gf3smred@peaknet.net
